About

What is producing? We're not sure. At the moment, we think it's the attempt to keep audiences and ourselves from getting bored. In 2001, two die-hard fans of radio decided to join together and fill the airwaves with sounds and stories that would keep them tuned in. In the process, we've covered a lot of ground, centered on our first passion: music. But whether it's a program on rock, jazz, country, bluegrass, blues, classical, funk, punk or folk, Joyride Media focuses on the big ideas behind the music. Someone in a conference room once called it "transformative listening." Okay, well... Joyride Media believes in learning about the larger world, hearing stories from those who lived them, and putting music and history into context. Our trick is weaving it into a narrative flow that feels familiar. The treat is hearing music you know in a totally new way.

I'm Paul Chuffo, one of the co-founders of Joyride Media and currently produce the specials. I started at WKCR-FM, Columbia University and moved on in 1995 to work at Murray Street Productions as Associate Producer of Jazz From Lincoln Center for NPR. In 1997, the team won a Peabody Award for the series. Two years later, I became producer of Special Projects at WNYC in New York, creating multiple national classical music series, live broadcasts and hot-housed several programs in development, including RadioLab. In 2002, I took the role of Senior Producer for Soundcheck with John Schaefer, a daily talk show about music. At the end of 2004, I left WNYC to concentrate on Joyride Media and since then have created more than 130 hours of programming aired on hundreds of stations in the US and abroad.

Also in my free time, I played drums in 19 countries and 48 states for the punk/jazz band gutbucket and electro-acoustic trio Lucibel Crater. Plus, I drummed for The Ex Caminos, the Dirty Sock Funtime Band and many more. I'm currently the in-house drum tutor for my kids Max and Maya - and an apprentice art mover for my wife, painter Heidi Neff Chuffo.
